Why HONEST FISH FARM?
In honor of our recent BRAND APPROVAL from the state, I thought it would be fun to share how we ended up as Honest Fish Farm..
One of the most common questions we get asked is “Why Honest FISH when you sell chicken & pork?”.. we laugh sometimes at how often we get asked if we sell fish, and we totally get it! Our name is a little misleading.. So here is a break down of HOW we came up with the name..
I should start with the most important fact in our decision, our last name is FISH. F-I-S-H, nothing fancy.. but from the moment we sat down and were thinking of a farm name we knew we wanted to include our last name. We always laugh, “the fish that sells pork & chicken”.. I have to admit, it sure gets us attention..
I still remember sitting with Jeremy, trying to come up with a farm name. WE had no clue where to start, we knew we wanted something with our last name but that was about it..
We started brainstorming words that we thought were important for what we were trying to do. We knew we wanted to raise animals, as naturally as possible and share the knowledge and experience with customers. We knew we wanted to be open with our process, unlike the commercial food industry, we wanted to share everything. No backdoors or hidden walls, how we raise and process our animals is an open book. We knew we wanted to provide a good product, at a reasonable price, to as many people as possible.
So, the words started flowing.. grassroots, simple, real, open, HONEST. Truth be told, we both kind of settled with Fish Root Farm for quite some time. We like the idea of the “roots” because we are first generation to hopefully our future generation farmers so we like the concept of being the “roots” of the name. We also liked the concept of being the base of our business and the idea of our awesome product rising from that solid base (like tree roots).
But the more we sat and talked about it… it never felt quite right, it wasn’t the right word for the commitment to what we a wanted to do and how we planned to farm.
We debated for awhile, must have been a couple more weeks.. and jeremy called one day and said “What about Honest Fish Farm?”… I LOVED IT. The minute he said it, I knew it was perfect.
Honest is exactly what we want our farm to be about, a good for you, honest product is what we are working to create. Being honest about our process, the good, the bad & the ugly. Being honest to customers about where their food is coming from. Being honest about our story and the behind the scenes of being first generation farmers.
And that was pretty much it, since then we have been Honest Fish Farm.. HONEST because of what we do, FISH because who we are, FARM.
& no, we do NOT sell Fish.. we might be Fish and we might be farmers, but we are definitely not Fish Farmers..
Until next time,
Elizabeth
